Synaptics drivers on Dell 1525 touchpad?

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Dell 1525 laptop to replace my Gateway ML 6720. I
bought the Dell refurbished through Dell outlet and I'm very pleased
with it except for the touchpad. The Dell touchpad doesn't have
anywhere near the same functionality as the Gateway touchpad did. I'm
not sure but I believe the Gateway used a Synaptics touchpad, is it
possible to use the drivers for the Synaptics touchpad on the Dell
1525? Or, is there another type of driver besides the Alps that I can
use on the 1525 with more features? I'm disabled with limited
dexterity and some of the functions on the Gateway's touchpad helped
tremendously with being able to use the touchpad.

What other brands of laptops use the Synaptics Brand touchpad? Thanks
for any advice.

Have you downloaded/installed this driver already?

Thanks Stew, but that drivers an earlier version of what's on my 1525,
can you tell how it differs? The most important function the
Synaptics driver had was its push & hold to lock function where I
Could hold the left mouse button for a few Sec. and this caused the
pointer to grab or lock onto wwhatever it was over. Is there a
function in Vista that might help w/.this or perhaps a generic touch
pad driver w/this function?

Again, thanks!

I have no idea. I find it odd that the Dell driver does not indicate
whether it is Alps or Synaptics.

Since that driver does not work, I suspect - as you've mentioned - a
software setting within Vista or within the touchpad application (if there
is one that accompanies the driver).

If you know which specific driver you have and whether it is Alps/Synaptics,
I suppose you could go out on the web and begin chasing down different
legacy drivers - but with Vista I wouldn't be too optimistic of your
chances.

It could just be that either the 1525 or Vista don't support the function.
Since I don't happen to have that model here, I can't verify. Maybe someone
here with a 1525 and that OS can test theirs for you.

I do have a hosed up Gateway here right now, but it's an XP machine. ;-)

We need someone with a 1525 to chime into this thread.........
