Hi,

I have a new Inspiron E1505/6400 with MediaDirect software. When I
press the "MediaDirect" button while the computer is turned on, the
Dell Media Experience program opens and everything seems to run fine.
However, when the computer is turned off and I press the same button,
the Dell "Media Direct" program opens but it does not detect my music
and picture files (not even the pre-loaded MP3s from Dell, only the
David Byrne MP3 that's part of the Windows XP package).

I've tried to go to "Settings" in MediaDirect and to "update library"
or "search for music," but it still doesn't work. (I haven't seen any
way to update library for pictures.)

I've also tried to place my music & picture files in both my personal
"My Documents" folder as well as a shared "All Users" folder, but still
it has not worked.

I'd prefer not to have to repair MediaDirect, because I tried doing
that using the MediaDirect Repair Utility (R113024.exe) but my computer
could not restart afterward (even in safe mode)--- I had to use PC
Restore to reinstall the entire OS!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I admit I've never used it, as I prefer MCE to control the buttons, but have
you tried putting the pictures in:

My Documents\My Pictures

and the Music in

My Documents\My Music

Those are the 'proper' directories.

My mediadirect on my i9400/E1705 never worked even when i got it new from
dell, I went to notebookforums.com and someone was hosting the mediadirect
2 installation cd. I downloaded this and installed (leaving 1500mb of
unallocated space) and everything is fine reads from usb and all drives.
Now if you have reinstalled windows then you can use the repair iso. The
media direct on most of the systems is in a hidden partition called a "hpa"
partition. Its hidden from windows and even the system bios.
So you cant delete media direct even if you delete all your partitions. You
just need the repair iso unless you didnt have mediadirect working in the
first place.

Hope this helps a little
